High School Prom, A Homeless Man & Thanksgiving

I was recently wrestling with 2 Corinthians, specifically ch. 9, v. 11.

“You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.” (ESV)

Fairly straight. I get that God’s blessings will cause us to be generous if our hearts are in the right place, but to be honest, being generous doesn’t produce thanksgiving in my heart. That confused me. Actually being generous sometimes makes me cranky. (I’ve been called more than frugal.)

Then I was reminded about some things that happened at my high school prom. Some friends and I pitched in and rented a limousine. About 4 couples to one limo. That’s cheap. I wasn’t dating anyone at the time so I was fixed up a with a Baptist girl. I liked her, but couldn’t get serious because I’d have to bring her to church. Then I’d have explain the gifts of the spirit to her, and I’m not sure they’d ever been explained to me. That’s for another post.

So after prom, we rolled out to Dallas in style. When we got out of the limo, we were approached by a frightening homeless man, obviously intoxicated. He asked us for some money so he could eat. So I did what any guy would do when he’s trying to impress a Baptist girl. I witnessed to him. Continue reading →
