Conversations

A few days ago, I had a lengthy phone conversation with my Father.  We don’t get to talk much because of work schedules, so I multi-tasked this with my nightly walk with Aryn.  Our conversation quickly turned to focus on scriptural concepts, as it often does.

We talked about a lot of things, but I wanted to pass on one thought in particular. In reference to the lack of solid teaching in most of our churches, I’ll quote dad as saying

“No doctrine equals bad doctrine.”

The idea behind his comment was that if you leave a congregation to figure out doctrine on their own, there is the strong possibility that they will get it from the wrong place and be led astray.  Can’t agree with Ol’ pops more.  We can see all throughout the New Testament that a paramount responsibiltity of teachers is to make sure that a church is not only taught truth but also held accountable to that truth.  Paul’s letters does this continually.

Paul says to Titus as he is organizing a church and appointing leaders:

Titus 1:9 He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.

Thanks Dad, for the reminder.
